Colombo gems fair attracts Yangon traders
By May Thandar
Win
GEMS and jewellery traders from Myanmar will, for the
second year, participate in an industry trade show in
the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo. This year's event,
called the Colombo Show, will take place from May 9
to 11.
"This is a good chance for Myanmar traders to make
new contacts and learn about new technologies, as there
will be traders from other countries," said U Sein
Win Hlaing, the secretary general of the Union of Myanmar
Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
More than 10 Myanmar gem companies will participate
this year, up from only two last year, he said.
The federation will be responsible for helping the traders
transport their gemstones and jewellery to the fair,
and for inspecting the exhibits before and after the
show.
"The traders do not need to pay tax before they
go but they will have to pay tax for the gems sold at
the show after they have come back to Myanmar,"
said U Sein Win Hlaing.
Myanmar traders will mainly exhibit the country's famous
Mogok rubies, pearls, sapphires and jade.
"Traders not only from Sri Lanka but also from
other countries are very interested in Myanmar rubies,"
said Mr Tennekoon Rusiripala, the director of the Ceylinco
Gem Corporation.
The corporation is the trade show's main sponsor and
one of the biggest companies in Sri Lanka.
"Myanmar has good raw materials, and there are
many world-renowned gem laboratories in Sri Lanka, so
if the two countries can collaborate it will be advantageous
to us both," Mr Rusiripala told Myanmar Times in
Yangon last week.
He said Myanmar should learn to use gem heat-treating
technology, which is quite advanced in Sri Lanka.
Myanmar should add value to natural gemstones with proper
technology, rather than selling raw stones, and Myanmar
gem trader should also have more international exposure,
he said.
Ma Soe Nan Thi, the managing
director of She Shines Gems and Jewellery, said the
company will participate in the gem show for the first
time this year, which will give them the chance to
explore new markets and make new contacts.
The quality of Myanmar gems is unrivalled, but advanced
techniques in heat treating gems and designing jewellery
need to be utilised if the products are to penetrate
international markets, she said.
Gem companies from India and Thailand will also participate
in the show. More than 150 companies are expected
to take part.
Sri Lanka also plans to arrange special travel rates
for participants and for those interested in travelling
to the show.
